a long time ago: we used to be friends unfolds in an autobiographical universe where the recognizable and the familiar are diluted to make way for an emotional apocalypse. The unknown of death, disarray and hyper-melancholy are all states that plunge lisa laurent into a tumultuous and trying sound. Using self-mockery to defuse the gravity of the themes that set her in motion, the piece becomes a laboratory for experimenting with different strategies for coexisting with human finitude. a long time ago: we used to be friends is an attempt to articulate an existential fear of emptiness in a world that seems perpetually on the brink.
